Understanding Addiction - Substance use disorder (SUD), also known as addiction, is a chronic and treatable illness, similar to other chronic illnesses. During this presentation, trainer Steven Samra will talk more about the progression from substance experimentation to full addiction and some factors that contribute to developing substance dependence. He will explain briefly the impact of heavy substance use on the brain and highlight various treatment options, including FDA-approved medications, that people can access to overcome SUD.  Steven will also talk about the impact of stigma and bias on a person’s ability to seek recovery and engage in treatment, and ways that we can reduce stigma and support people to gain access to treatment and recovery services.
